Kumuda Krovvidi

Kumuda Krovvidi is a Singapore-based visual artist, author and arts educator whose work brings the artistic traditions of India into a contemporary context.

For over fifteen years, her research-led practice has explored the intersections of art, music, literature and cultural heritage, creating richly narrative works grounded in tradition yet distinctly contemporary in their expression.

Her work has been exhibited at prominent Singapore venues including The Arts House and The Fullerton Hotel Singapore, and has featured in cultural initiatives supported by some of the country’s leading arts and public institutions.

Artistic Practice

Kumuda’s practice is distinguished by ambitious, research-driven bodies of work.

In 2014, she presented Ramayana in Mithila Art at The Arts House, creating a visual narrative of the Indian epic through the Mithila tradition. The exhibition was inaugurated by the High Commissioner of India to Singapore.

In 2021, she returned to The Arts House with Visual Melodies, a collection of 36 works exploring the centuries-old tradition of Ragamala painting and its relationship with Indian classical music. The exhibition coincided with the publication of her book on the subject.

Her work was also selected for the Singapore President’s Charity Art Exhibition and Auction in 2015 and exhibited at The Fullerton Hotel Singapore. To commemorate the occasion, Singapore Post issued a limited-edition postage stamp featuring one of her artworks.

Internationally, her work has received recognition through juried selections and features in the United States and internationally, including Landscape Art Review, Contemporary Art Gallery, A5 Art Magazine, Camelback Gallery and The Art Room Gallery.

Art, Education & Singapore

Beyond the studio, Kumuda has played an active role in Singapore’s arts education and cultural landscape.

As Co-Founder and Director of Strokearts Studio, she developed visual arts curricula and programmes spanning traditional and digital practice. Her work as an educator has included collaborations with Esplanade, National Arts Council, National Heritage Board, Indian Heritage Centre, SOTA, LASALLE College of the Arts, Temasek Polytechnic and Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum, alongside community and corporate programmes.

Her practice has also taken art beyond traditional gallery and classroom settings, from programmes for senior communities through Esplanade Outreach to public arts initiatives including Singapore’s PAssionArts programme.

In recognition of her wider contribution, Kumuda was named among India Se’s Top Ten Women Achievers in Singapore and invited to speak at a TEDx event in Singapore on the theme Breaking Boundaries.

Kumuda founded Kriti Arts Limited with a vision to build on this intersection of artistic practice, cultural heritage, education and community.
